Released in 2016, the Pilón line was CAO’s homage to the traditional Cuban pilón fermentation method — a bulk-aging process in which tobacco is stacked in large, covered mounds (pilones) and regularly turned to generate gentle heat and pressure. This method, once common in pre-revolution Cuba, encourages the leaves to undergo a secondary fermentation that deepens sweetness, integrates flavors, and smooths out rough edges without stripping the tobacco of its character. For the Maduro expression, CAO selected a Honduran Maduro wrapper grown in the Jamastran Valley, a region known for producing rich, dark wrappers with natural oils and a slightly toothy texture. That leaf is bound with Nicaraguan tobacco and filled with a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-fillers, all aged in the pilón style. The result is a robusto that measures 5 inches by a 50-ring gauge, hand-rolled at STG Honduras (formerly HATSA) in Danlí, and priced to sit in the everyday tier — yet delivering a complexity that often escapes far more expensive cigars. What elevates the Pilón Maduro beyond the crowded field of medium-full maduros is the fermentation itself. Rather than relying on artificial sweetening or heavy casing, the pilón process coaxes a natural, layered sweetness from the tobaccos.
