The Diplomatico format, as exemplified by the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Diplomatico Maduro, is a 6 x 50 robusto extra—a straight-sided parejo with a 50-ring gauge and a 6-inch length. At 50 ring, the draw resistance is moderate, offering a balanced airflow that allows the filler blend to express fully without overwhelming the palate. Compared to a Robusto (typically 5 x 50), the extra inch of length in the Diplomatico increases the smoke's journey through the filler, cooling the smoke slightly at the foot and allowing for a more gradual flavor evolution—starting with the core notes of the blend and building in complexity as the heat travels toward the cap. The 50-ring gauge also means a higher filler-to-wrapper ratio than a thinner vitola like a Corona, which shifts the flavor balance toward the ligero and seco leaves in the filler, muting some of the wrapper's delicate nuances while amplifying depth and body. Against a Toro (6 x 52), the Diplomatico's slightly smaller ring gauge yields a marginally tighter draw and a more concentrated flavor delivery, making each puff feel more defined.
